Joan & The Giants Release ‘Home Song’
The other day I wrote a little thing about ‘Who Are You After Me?’ by Angie Colman (read it here) and I mentioned she was playing a show at The Bird in Perth (tickets here). Well if seeing Angie wasn’t enough of a reason to check that gig out (which it absolutely is), then another killer band on that night is Joan & The Giants who just put out a new single called ‘Home Song’.
Written by vocalist Grace Newton-Wordsworth, ‘Home Song’ is a sort of love letter to partner and fellow band member Aaron Birch. The track is all about putting things into perspective and never taking the important things for granted.
Interestingly, I quite enjoyed ‘Home Song’ on the first listen, but after reading more about what inspired the song I was able to hear it through a new lens (or whatever the aural version of a lens is) which helped me connect with it more than I already did. In fact, before I share what Grace had to say about the inspiration behind the song, give it a listen. Then come back to learn more and give it another listen. Just see how your perspective of the song changes.
Now that you’ve listened, here’s what Grace had to share about the song “‘Home Song’ was written on a Sunday in June 2021. Aaron and I had a pointless fight over nothing (probably the dishes), then he saw all of these missed calls on his phone and found out his grandma was seriously ill and he needed to fly to Broome immediately to say goodbye”.
She continues “When he flew away, it put everything into perspective and I just wanted to take the pain from his chest and hold it for a while. It taught me to not take anything for granted, and to hold the people you love close... So this song is for Aaron, my home”.
That is beautiful. Now that it’s time to listen again, I hope this puts the song in a new light for you.
