5 Iconic Songs From 5 Iconic Teenage Movie Soundtracks

Brisbane-based band Melaleuca recently put out a new single called ‘Point Of Normal’. After listening to it, I reckon it’s about time I start a petition to get Melaleuca on the soundtrack of a teenage movie. In the meantime, Jane Millroy from the band has put together a list of five iconic tunes from five iconic teenage movies. Take it away Jane.

5. Bend it like Beckham – 'Inner Smile' by Texas: This song makes me want to strap on a pair of footy boots and kick a monstrous free kick into an open goal. After I've completed my knee-slide goal celebration, I'm putting on a pair of headphones with this song and dancing the night away.

4. Angus Thongs and The Perfect Snogging – 'Ultraviolet' - Stiff Dylans. This song is a combination of my peak Paramore / guitar hero phase. I was obsessed with cheesy punk music, and this song satisfied all of my needs. It's the perfect teenage love song for the perfect teenage love movie.

3. She's The Man – '4Ever' – The Veronicas: It would be remiss of me not to include these Brisbane icons in such a list. I loved The Veronica's so much that I would make my own posters using word art and pictures of the twins and print them out. I also owned a pink Roxy studded belt - I felt this was important to share for the context. Still kicking myself that I didn't force my parents to take me to see them at Australia Zoo for Bindi Irwin's 9th Birthday.

2. Twilight – 'Decode' by Paramore: How did we get here? By watching one of the greatest pieces of cinema in the history of the art form. Whatever your thoughts on the movie are, it is undeniable that it produced an incredible soundtrack. I'm happy to claim underground status and say I knew them before the movie. My bedroom walls were covered with large posters of Hayley Williams.

1. 10 Things I Hate About You – 'Calypso' by Spiderbait. I've been told that Melaleuca sounds like a band that would play on the school's rooftop at the end of this film, and honestly, I can't think of a better compliment for my music-making. Calypso matches the pure teenage angst of the film perfectly. My favourite song from my favourite teen film is a no-brainer that this is number 1.

Thanks for that incredible list Jane. When you’ve finished listening to those five absolute gems of songs, why not listen to ‘Point of Normal’ by Melaleuca. They will prepare you for your next teenage movie night.
