Ivoris and r.em.edy release ‘Drive Thru’
Probably the saddest thing about my life is that I only ever want to order off the breakfast menu at the drive-thru but I’m seldom awake at an hour where that is an option. But don’t worry, I’ve found a new coping mechanism. Every late morning/early afternoon while I’m sitting there in deep sorrow, wishing I was eating my favourite drive-thru meal (hotcakes and two hashbrowns), I’ll put on ‘Drive Thru’ by Ivoris and r.em.edy and all will be good with the world.
‘Drive Thru’ really does have that vibe about it. Although it’s lyrically not the happiest song in the world, there’s something about the production and especially Ivoris’s vocals that feels incredibly wholesome and upbeat.
The track is all about the complicated emotions that come with casual dating. Inspired by a Maccas run (translation for those outside Australia: driving to a Mcdonalds drive-thru with the sole purpose of getting a meal to bring home. Often done when food is needed in a rush. Example: “Oh shit, the footy starts in 20 minutes. Don’t worry, I’ll go on a Maccas run”), Ivoris explains “It’s about that feeling of instant gratification you get from satisfying a junk food craving, and also the crashing wave of regret that comes afterwards”.
A highlight in the song is the juxtaposition between Ivoris’s sweet r&b vocals and r.em.edy’s slightly more aggressive hip-hop-inspired vocals. Those two elements add a certain je ne sais quoi to ‘Drive Thru’ (someone’s on a Duolingo hot streak). I would be lying if I said I was an expert on r&b pop, but the song gave off a similar vibe to another great Australian artist, DVNA.
It was great hearing Ivoris and r.em.edy collab. Hopefully, they share many more songs in the future, both solo and together.
