Machine on a Break Releases ‘Things That Go Bump’
You know when you get sick and your brain isn’t functioning at full capacity? In those times I like to make decisions that require way more consideration than I can give them at that moment. For example, in April when I was struck down with the spicy cough, I received a message from my friend Jessie. It was a two-parter:
Do you know how to play metal guitar?
Would you be interested in playing for my metal project Machine on A Break (MOAB)?
My answers:
Of course I play metal guitar, who doesn’t
I’d love to play for MOAB, who wouldn’t
The truth is, outside of a few Metallica and Black Sabbath riffs, I know very little about playing metal. I don’t know why I chose to lie that day but I’m glad I did. I now get to play some very fun shows with a very good friend (We have a show in Sydney this Sunday. Buy your tickets here).
My favourite thing about MOAB (also known by her government name Jessie Wilson) is her ability to write songs that can be quite heavy both sonically and subject-wise while also having fantastic pop sensibilities about them. This is no more apparent than on her latest single ‘Things That Go Bump’.
‘Things That Go Bump’ is a song that highlights issues surrounding domestic violence. On the track, MOAB says "I wrote this song as a way to express my anger and frustration at how we as a society deal with violence against women. It's time for us to start taking this issue seriously and doing something about it”.
Something I really admire about MOAB is how open and honest she is about her experiences in life. Whether it’s her history with domestic violence or her battles with mental health, she will always voice her opinion and share her stories. Although it can quite confronting and uncomfortable to hear at times, it’s important for stories like hers to be told.
